Do This in Remembrance of Me

When Jesus ate the Passover meal with his disciples the night before His execution, He instituted the Lord’s supper that we still celebrate and practice to this day. The words Jesus uttered to His disciples as recorded by Luke was: “do this in remembrance of me” (Lk. 22:19). These words weren’t just stated to the 12 but to all of those whom Jesus saved.

What Jesus would do on the cross was so pivotal, so excruciating and yet so loving that it would demand the attention and devotion of all His faithful followers. His request was that on every Sunday we gather to worship Him, we would remember what He did for us on the cross. It amazes me how much Jesus did for us yet how little we are willing to do for Him.

To remember what Jesus did for us is not to simply eat a meal trivially as the Corinthians were doing in such a disgraceful manner. When we eat the Lord’s supper, we need to understand that every drop of blood Jesus and every ounce of pain He felt was poured into our destiny and our salvation and as we eat and as we pray we ought to remember all these things. Every time we worship and every day we have is another opportunity to remember the One who died so that we might live.
